Diabetes Awareness Training

By taking this training, you will have an in-depth knowledge of diabetes and be confident in offering help and support.
Chapter 1 : Definition and causes of Diabetes
Diabetes mellitus, commonly known as diabetes, is a metabolic disease that causes high blood sugar. The hormone insulin moves sugar from the blood into your cells to be stored or used for energy. With diabetes, your body either doesn’t make enough insulin or can’t effectively use the insulin it does make.
Untreated high blood sugar from diabetes can damage your nerves, eyes, kidneys, and other organs.
Chapter 2 : Diagnosis
Doctors use these blood tests to diagnose prediabetes and diabetes:
- The fasting plasma glucose (FPG) test measures your blood sugar after you’ve fasted for 8 hours.
- The A1C test provides a snapshot of your blood sugar levels over the previous 3 months.
The earlier you get diagnosed with diabetes, the sooner you can start treatment.
Chapter 3 : Understanding the difference between Type 1 and 2 diabetes
There are two main types of diabetes: type 1 and type 2. Both types of are chronic diseases that affect the way your body regulates blood sugar, or glucose. Glucose is the fuel that feeds your body’s cells, but to enter your cells it needs a key. Insulin is that key.
Chapter 4 : The symptoms of diabetes
On this chapter participants will learn how to be able to monitor and manage symptoms effectively with the involvement of the patient and the whole MDT.
Chapter 5 : Current NICE Guidelines of Diabetes
For participants to be reminded to keep up to date and practice in line with current NICE Guidelines.
